Kochi: India and Mozambique should share knowledge and resources to fight
globalisation and make optimum use of their Rs 235 crore bilateral trade relations,
the Mozambique Industry and Commerce Minister Carlos Alberto Sampaio Morgado, said
on April 24.
Morgado, who is leading a high-power business delegation of his country to India,
said at a seminar on "Business opportunities in Mozambique", organised by the
Confederation of Indian industries (CII), that the two countries should put the
knowledge of their people, enterprises and capacities together to fight
globalisation.
To attract foreign direct investment (FDI), Mozambique was providing an enabling
investment climate with incentives like industrial free zones, industrial parks and
special development zones, he said.
There was vast potential for India to export its textiles and garments to
Mozambique, which could be reprocessed and exported to other countries without
paying any tariffs, he said. Same was the case of cashew. India was the biggest
importer of raw cashew from Mozambique.
Instead of importing the cashew, India could not only share its knowledge on
processing but also export it with higher profits for both the countries, he said.
Vast scope for infrastructure developement also existed, he said.
Mozambique was interested in trade promotion (import and export), partnership and
joint venture promotion in agro industry sectors, rice, tea, cashew nuts, cotton,
coconut, timber and wood products and low cost construction materials, textiles,
education and training courses, IT and tourism.
In his address, CII's regional deputy chairman K K M Kutty, said India had a strong
base in small and medium enterprises with the sector accounting for 30 to 35 per
cent of total Indian exports. Kerala could provide support in IT, tourism, education
and Agro business sectors, he said.
Mahomed Rafique, Director Investment Promotion Centre, a Mozambique government
agency, Oza Javin Pushkar Rai, president of the Indian professional and business
council- a forum of expatriate of Indian community in Mozambique, Pamela Anna
Mathew, Chairperson CII (SR) Kerala, V N P Kaimal Managing Director, KINFRA export
promotion industrial parks, were among those who spoke. Carlos A Rosario, High
Commissioner of Mozambique in India, was also present.
