Tuesday, April 2 2002 15:06 Hrs (IST)

Chennai: Curtis 1000 Europe AG, European market leader in the high quality transport and shipping packaging segment is to roll out tear proof "Tyvek" envelopes in the Indian market through its Indian joint venture this year.

Lifafa India Ltd, the company's 50:50 Indian JV has already started trial production near Chennai and the initial range of Tyvek envelops are scheduled to hit the Indian market by December this year, Mohammed Arshad, managing director of Lifafa said.

Tyvek envelops, made out of spunbounded polyethylene which combines the properties of paper, film, and fabric are claimed to be tear resistant, water resistant, chemical resistant besides acid and termite proof making it ideal for security packaging.

"Try throwing a stuffed tyvek envelope from a skyscraper or pour acid on it or try to tear it, you can't damage it a bit," Arshad said adding the company's market study has revealed that the demand for the same was huge in India especially from segments like universities, credit card firms, couriers and IT outfits.

He said the present capacity of the JV was 1,50,000 envelopes a day and plans were afoot to go in for a Rs 3 crore expansion within the next three years. "We are also planning an IPO at a later stage," he added.
