New Delhi: Railways will soon develop a computer-based ticketing system under which
passengers could buy unreserved tickets even from locations other than boarding
station.
Announcing this while presenting the 2002-03 Railway Budget in the Lok Sabha on
February 26, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar said that the system would be able to
issue monthly and quarterly season tickets as well.
A pilot project for this purpose is to be launched during 2002-03 in connection with
150th year of Railways.
Of the 13 million passengers who travel by Indian Railways, 12 million are
unreserved passengers, he said.
Kumar said he has decided to provide Computerised reservation system at all stations
where the reservation related workload was over 100 transactions per day, besides at
important stations and all district headquarters.
A total of 150 more terminals would be provided for this purpose taking the total
number of PRS terminals in the country to 850 by the end of 2002-03.
