  • Karvy Research Desk
  • comprehensive Research Reports on the major high market cap listed companies right from the background to performance and updates.

  • Cadbury: Sweet taste of success
  • Cadbury India has come a very long way since 1948 when it first set up shop in India. In fact, in the last decade the company’s sales have grown at a healthy CAGR (compounded growth) of 17% (FY01: Rs 5.7 bn). Net profit growth during the same period has been nearly 26% (FY01: Rs 523 m). However, the real spurt in the company’s performance has come in the last five years.

  • Telco: All set for a turnaround
  • The Chairman’s statement in Tata Engineering’s (Telco) annual report reads “ the year (2001) has, without doubt, been a year of crises for the company and while it has aggressively addressed several areas relating to cost, quality and product offerings, it should have performed better in the market place by protecting or possibly even growing its market share…” After reporting a record loss of Rs 5 bn in FY01, the company has embarked an aggressive growth strategy. If indications are to be believed, Telco is possibly heading northwards!

  • Satyam: Blemished pioneers
  • In January 1992, when Satyam computers wanted to put up a 64 kbps data link it had to convince all and sundry in the government that it was not working against the country’s security and was not leaking any of the countries secret. This is what the company that pioneered ‘offshore’ development to go through. Today as the software industry, as it faces one of the most challenging times ever, has fallen back on the offshore advantage to give it an edge above global competition. It is these pioneering efforts that led to the 146-fold increase in revenues of the company between 1992 and 2000.

  • Zee: Time to change
  • A Pioneer in Satellite TV…. After staying on top for over six years, India’s first private TV channel, Zee TV, is now facing severe heat from Star and Sony. Zee was the first channel to introduce satellite television in India way back in 1991. Even after the entry of Sony Entertainment Television (SET) in 1996, Zee had consistently maintained its numero uno position in the Indian entertainment market. Today, the channel reaches 225 m people worldwide and covers around 25%-30% of television homes on a pan India basis. Zee Network is South Asia’s premier broadcasting and cable organisation having presence in areas including Internet, education and convergence.

  • Britannia: All set to 'milk' the market
  • Britannia is the largest bakery products manufacturer in India. The company is the leader in the organised biscuits segment with a 38% market share (value-terms). It also manufactures bread and cakes. Currently, Britannia is focusing on expanding its business to dairy products like cheese, butter, ghee and dairy whitener.
