TN targets 9% growth during 2007-12

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government is targeting a nine percent economic growth during the 11th Five-year Plan (2007-12) in line with the central government's target.

Releasing the state plan document here Thursday, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi appealed for cooperation from all quarters to achieve the target.

The total plan size for the state is Rs.853.44 billion. As per the plan document, the state is targeting four percent growth in agriculture and has allocated a sum of Rs.111.45 billion towards irrigation and agriculture activities.

The allocation for major activities is - power: Rs.107.43 billion, industrial development: Rs.37.16 billion, roads: Rs.116.47 billion, social welfare: Rs.377.33 billion and rural development: Rs.102.41 billion.

According to Karunanidhi, the plan schemes have been designed to increase the agriculture productivity, the farmer's income and the job opportunities for the youth.

The chief minister said Tamil Nadu was ranked third in India in implementing the growth indicators listed by United Nations.
