New Delhi: Around 90 per cent of the work on the third runway at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here has been completed and it will be commissioned this year.

"Work is progressing fast on the third runway and associated taxiways. More than 90 per cent work is complete and the runway will be commissioned this year," a statement from DIAL, which completes second year of its airport operations, said.

The 4,430 metres runway will be one of the longest in Asia and feature CAT IIIB Instrument Landing System at both ends. This will allow landings in visibility as low as 50 metres, it said, adding the 60-metre wide, Code F runway will also cater to new generation large aircrafts such as the Airbus A380.
DIAL, a joint venture consortium mandated to modernise and restructure the IGIA, took charge of the IGI Airport on May 3, 2006.

The initiatives that DIAL has taken since then includes setting up of state-of-the-art Airport Operation Command Centre (AOCC) to streamline the airport operations and maximise the efficiency of resources available.

To provide better medical facilities to air passengers and employees, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital was awarded the license to operate and manage medical facilities at all passenger and cargo terminals of the airport.

Also call centre was set-up, website was updated with live Flight Information Display System (FIDS), apart from commissioning of four new rapid exit taxiways on runway 10 to facilitate faster movement of aircraft after landing.

DIAL was awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 quality certificate for IGI Airport in October 2007. Earlier, the International Cargo Terminal was awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2000 quality certificate as well.
