Tea prices improve on increased demand

Coonoor: Various varieties of tea met with improved demand in the sales held here on March 6-7.

A quantity of 5,11,270.3 kg of tea was offered in the sale. In the orthodox leaf market, well made whole leaf sorts moved up following quality and competition. The leafy brokens firm up to Rs 2. The BOPFs sold dearer by Rs 2 on competition. In the CTC leaf category, brighter liquoring teas witnessed better demand with the improved invoices appreciating substantially while the others sold at irregularly improved prices.

Strong demand prevailed on the better medium, medium and plainer teas. The medium brokens sold dearer by Rs 2-3. The smaller brokens and fannings sold dearer by Rs 3-4 and sometimes more for the blacker sorts. The Primary Dusts ruled firm to dearer prices while the Secondary Dusts sold dearer by up to Rs 1. The cleaner residuals sold dearer by up to Rs 2 following competition.

In the CTC dust, market, strong demand prevailed on all categories of tea on offer. The brighter liquoring teas moved up following quality and competition. The better medium and medium teas rose Rs 2-3. The plainer sorts also gained Rs 2-3 and sometimes more on the cleaner blacker sorts.
