Google donates $3.5 mn for polio eradication
Thursday, February 21, 2008 22:17 [IST]

New Delhi: The Google foundation has donated $3.5 million to the Rotary International for polio eradication.

The grant will directly support polio immunisation activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership spearheaded by the World Health Organisation, Rotary International, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.

Rotary International will raise funds to match the Google foundation grant, dollar-to-dollar over one year. "Though much of the world has eradicated Polio, the disease is still crippling children in countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria -- the four polio endemic countries," Deepak Kapur, Chairman India National PolioPlus Committee of Rotary International said.
