Rly revenue goes up despite decline in passengers

New Delhi: Despite the marginal decrease in the number of passengers booked during the period from February 1 to 10 this year, the total earnings of Indian Railways have gone up for the same period.

The total number of passengers booked during this period was 180.40 million compared to 182.66 million during the same period last year, showing a decrease of 1.24 per cent. In the suburban sector also, the number of passengers booked during the period was 102.06 million compared to 105.49 million for the same period last year, registering a decrease of 3.25 per cent.

However, the total earnings of Indian Railways during this period were Rs 2,156.16 crore compared to Rs 1,736.15 crore during the same period last year, registering an increase of 24.19 per cent. The total goods earnings have gone up from Rs 1,194.47 crore during the period last year to Rs 1,465.47 crore for the same period this year, showing an increase of 22.69 per cent.

The total passenger earnings during this period were Rs 624.16 crore compared to Rs 474.98 crore during the same period last year, reflecting an increase of 31.41 per cent. The earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 47.92 crore during this period compared to Rs 47.18 crore during this period last year, showing an increase of 1.57 per cent, acording to an official release.

There is a growth of 1.52 per cent in the non-suburban sector as the total passengers booked during the period was 78.34 million compared to 77.17 million during the same period last year.
