New Delhi: The implementation of mobile number portability is likely to be delayed. Even though the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) recently announced it would be introduced in metros by the end of 2008, industry sources told DNA Money that the project is running behind schedule.
Now, it is learnt that it may take up to two years for number portability to start rolling out.
Setting up a central database and a clearing house are time-consuming procedures, a telecom industry representative pointed out.
Besides, there are commercial and security aspects to look into, he added.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), along with industry representatives, is currently preparing the modalities for implementing number portability.
Late last year, the government had announced that it would be introduced by the end of 2008, and that a decision on 'A' circle towns like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would be taken in April 2008.
Although Trai had recommended its introduction way back in March 2006, DoT announced its intention to roll it out only in November 2007.
Number portability enables you to switch to another service provider within the same service area while retaining your phone number.
The industry was divided on the issue after the announcement was made.
While one group called it a consumerfriendly move, another argued that it should have been introduced in a more holistic manner, covering all operators (fixed and mobile). At present, only mobile phone numbers are being considered for portability.
