OPEC unlikely to change production levels
Thursday, January 31, 2008 17:30 [IST]

Brussels: OPEC ministers are unlikely to change their oil production levels when they meet in Vienna tomorrow, Iraq's Oil Minister Hussein Shahristani told reporters in Brussels on the eve of the meeting.

"For this time I don't think there will be any revision of production," Shahristani said after a breakfast meeting with EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner.

"We don't think there is a shortage on the oil market. There is no need to increase production," he added.

Key ministers of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries who had already arrived in the Austrian capital yesterday hinted that they were unlikely to bow to US pressure for an increase in oil output to cool crude prices which recently surged to record high points above 100 dollars.

However the Iraqi minister said, "if we realise there is a need to increase production we are always ready to do so".
