Godrej gets relief from court in ad war with Wipro
Friday, November 23, 2007 20:36 [IST]

New Delhi: Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) today said a Ludhiana district court has restrained rival Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting (WCCL) from showing a controversial advertisement of a liquid detergent brand.

"The Civil Judge, Ludhiana District Court restrained WCCL from such advertising in any form, direct or indirect. The court has passed an ad-interim injunction order restraining Wipro from continuing the controversial advertisement," GCPL said in statement here.

The case pertains to an advertisement by WCCL that directly compared its liquid detergent brand Wipro Safewash to GCPL's Godrej Ezee . The court, restrained WCCL from such advertising in any form, direct or indirect, Godrej said.

GCPL claimed its Ezee was the market leader in the liquid detergent category with 81 per cent share.

Earlier this month, Wipro had obtained an injunction from a Hyderabad court against what it termed was "a misleading advertisement" released by Godrej, which claimed its soap brand Godrej No 1 was the segment leader. The advertisement of Godrej's soap had disparaging comparisons to Wipro's Santoor Soap. This was challenged by Wipro on the ground that the advertisement was unfair, unethical, incorrect and misleading.

The Hyderabad court had accepted Wipro's plea and restrained Godrej from continuing the advertisement till further orders.
